Probably every home needs a place to store unnecessary or rarely used items. However, sometimes we find it difficult to arrange space for them, for one reason or another. Many find the closet a useless place or just a hiding place for lovers, and decide to remove it to free up some more space in their home.
However, the truth is that a closet or a similar type of premise is of the utmost importance for any household – suppose you do not want messy things or places whose places are permanently undetermined? If you consider yourself a good host and you like to keep your belongings at hand, then the closet or at least an additional storage organizer will not hurt you.
Don't have a closet? You have other options
The lack of a closet should not scare you. You always have great alternatives. Here are some of them:
A buffet is a good choice when there is no closet. You can use not only shelves but also doors – for example, by hanging bags or bags on them, which are also used for storage. Attach a few hooks and store unnecessary items.
Open shelves are especially relevant in small kitchens. This way the housewife can easily pick up anything she needs just by reaching out. It is very comfortable. The basic thing is to install the shelves well and to place them at such a level that they do not interfere in any way.
The kitchen islands continue to be modern and functional. There can be many shelves and compartments, not only open, but also closed. In addition to storing things in them, you can put everything you use most often on top.
Do it yourself storage space
If you do not have a closet or storage space, why not consider the possibility of making such space yourself?
For starters, think about what you will store there. Depending on this and, of course, the size of the room, calculate the width and determine the location to be used.
You can use wooden shelves to be horizontal or D-shaped.
An alternative to the door, if it is not possible to install one, may be ordinary curtains. Sliding doors or accordion doors are also suitable.
Materials and finishes for your closet
If we are talking about storage of kitchen utensils, then it is worth it to build a room to choose natural materials. They will help to lower the temperature, which is quite important.
The best closet flooring is tiles. They help the place stay cool. Laminate or parquet flooring should not be used as it may be affected by humidity or temperature.
For walls, it is advisable to use a cement-sand mortar after having been pre-treated with an antibacterial primer. This technique will help to avoid the appearance of mold in the future. You can paint the walls or put wallpaper.
Consider lighting and ventilation
The use of a closet should be as comfortable as possible for you. So don't forget the lighting. Keep this in mind during the initial repair phase.
Use a built-in or LED light and place several lamps on the ceiling.
You should also take care of the ventilation in advance. It is necessary for the normal storage of food. If possible, install a cooling system and a filter in the closet. If you are not able to do this, make sure the space can breathe.
Avoid building a closet in places with high humidity or excessively high temperatures – all this will not affect well the stored products.
How to store products?
It's important to pay attention to how you store your products in your closet. Different rules apply to different foods:
For bulk (cereals, spices, pasta, tea, coffee), glass or plastic jars are a good solution.
You can also use glass jars or bottles for liquids. Arrange them so that there is no danger of them being overturned.
Vegetables like to breathe, so don't put them in plastic boxes or plastic bags.
Put onion and garlic in a net or canvas bag, and potatoes, beets and carrots in wooden, metal boxes with holes or knit baskets.
One more small detail: label jars, baskets and boxes. Make attractive stickers and decorate everything in the closet. This will always make it easy for you to find what you need. Among other things, it will look stylish and beautiful.
